It’s Hound’s 1 YEAR ADOPT-A-VERSARY TODAY 🥹🥹🥹 This guy is such a delight I am so grateful for him every single day. So, to celebrate, he gets pupcakes!!
This recipe is wildly simple, with only 6 ingredients: apple, banana, egg, peanut butter, baking powder, and an optional yogurt “frosting”. These are all tried-and-true favourites for Hound. The guy is obsessed with peanut butter, and likes a little apple slice or banana chunk as a treato as well. (Please see photo below for how he looks at me whenever I break out the PB). The best part is that these ingredients are not only tasty for him but also safe and healthy for dogs!
Now, if your own pup does not like apple or banana, don’t worry! You can substitute pumpkin puree, which doesn’t have a super strong flavour and does a good job of providing moisture while hiding behind the peanut butter flavour. Just use 1/2 cup for each replacement you’re making. So if you’re only swapping out the apple, you’ll have 1/2 cup pumpkin, and 1 banana. If you’re only swapping out the banana, you’ll have 1/2 cup pumpkin, and 1 apple. If you’re swapping out both, use 1 cup pumpkin! Easy, right?
The yogurt and peanut butter “frosting” is technically an optional addition to these pupcakes, but I don’t know why you would deny your pal a bit of extra peanut butter goodness. It’s also a surprisingly excellent consistency for piping and decorating – a delightful bonus for those looking to be a little bit extra with their presentation.
To make ’em, it’s super easy… literally just mix all the ingredients together in one bowl. Then scoop into your cupcake tin, with or without liners, and bake at 350 for about 20 minutes. They don’t rise much (just a little dome), so you can nearly fill the liners.
Then let them cool, and make your “frosting”. This is a mix of Greek yogurt and peanut butter – both dog-friendly ingredients! But this can be a bit rich, so use sparingly (especially with little dogs). It takes a while to come together, but once the yogurt and peanut butter have incorporated, it gets a nice, smooth texture.
I also added little dog bone treats to the top of the pupcakes, as a last touch of decor! And got peanut butter flavoured ones of course, to add even more PB to the mix.
For serving, be warned: these can get a little messy if you went the “frosting” route! 😂 And I would recommend limiting your pup to one a day for medium-big dogs, or a half serving for little guys. I mean, you guys know your dogs best, only give their tummies as much as they can handle! The pupcakes can be stored in the fridge for up to a week, so they can enjoy for days on end!
If there’s ever a time for you to share your creations with me, have it be now. PLEASE share pics of your pups enjoying these pupcakes on socials & tag me!!
Happy baking!

Decoration (optional):
- Mix 1/2 cup Greek yogurt with 1 heaping tablespoon peanut butter.
- Once the pupcakes are cool, generously spread or pipe the yogurt and peanut butter mixture on top of each cupcake.
Notes
1. Ingredient Substitutions:
- You can use pumpkin puree instead of apple or banana, depending on your pup’s preferences! Sub approx 1/2 cup pumpkin puree for the banana, and 1/2 cup for the apple.
- Feel free to experiment with dog-safe add-in fruits such as blueberries or carrots!
- Use natural peanut butter without added sugars or xylitol, as these can be harmful to dogs.
2. Serving Size:
- Adjust the serving size based on your dog’s breed and size. Smaller dogs may only need a portion of a cupcake, while larger breeds can enjoy a whole one. Hound is 75 pounds, so he can easily enjoy a whole cupcake without worry.
3. Allergies and Dietary Restrictions:
- If your dog has known allergies or dietary restrictions, consult with your veterinarian before introducing new ingredients.
4. Storage:
- Store leftover pupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can also freeze them for longer shelf life.
