Hound’s 7th Birthday Paw-ty Cake

Today, Hound is SEVEN YEARS OLD!! To celebrate his birthday I obviously had to make him a cake. This recipe is similar to his Peanut Butter Pupcakes from last year, with a few small changes. It’s a very simple recipe, so it’s quite easy to tweak and adjust for missing ingredients, or your pup’s preferences!

The idea to make it paw shaped came to me on a run when I was trying to think of Valentine’s Day cake ideas, and I clocked how a paw pad is pretty similar to a heart! Add a few cupcakes for toe beans, and we have a full paw print 🙂

This is not the first time I tried piping this “frosting”, but I was still pleasantly surprised at how well it held its shape considering it’s only two ingredients! It most definitely was not perfect, but guys… this is a cake for a dog. It was fine.

Here’s a video of the decor, and some bonus footage of Hound enjoying his treat:

Happy baking!

Servings 12 servings

Ingredients

Pupcake

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup applesauce or one mashed banana
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter

Instructions

Pupcake

  • Preheat oven to 350℉. Grease and line one small heart shaped pan (or one 6" round cake pan), and 5 wells of a cupcake pan.
  • Add all the wet ingredients (oil, peanut butter, pumpkin puree, and egg) to a bowl and whisk until smooth.
  • Add the flour and baking soda, and mix with a spatula until just combined.
  • Place a heaping tablespoon of batter into each of the 5 cupcake liners, then pour the remaining batter into the cake pan.
  • Bake for approximately 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cupcakes/cake comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake and cupcakes to cool for at least 30 minutes before frosting.

Frosting

  • Add the yogurt and peanut butter to a bowl, and stir until combined and smooth. Optionally, separate this into two bowls and add a touch more peanut butter to one bowl, to give yourself varying shades to work with!
  • Spread the icing over the cakes, and let your pup dig in!

Notes

Serving Size
  • I don’t recommend feeding this entire cake to your dog in one sitting!! Hound is a big boy (80 pounds) and I still only let him have 1 cupcake – or the equivalent amount of cake – with each meal. If you have a little one, consider scaling this down.
Substitutions
  • Feel free to replace the applesauce with 1 mashed ripe banana. You can also replace the pumpkin puree with applesauce or a mashed ripe banana. Basically, you just need 1 cup total of mushy fruits/vegetables!
Storage
  • This cake can be stored in the fridge for up to a week, or you can freeze it for up to 3 months.
