Hi friends!
Today I want to share a little peek into the humble beginnings of my social media accounts. SPOOKY! And no, I don’t mean weird selfies from my Facebook – I mean back to the start of my dessert photography days! Get ready to dive into a journey that’s all about turning your desserts into irresistible eye candy.

As annoying as it can be at times, social media is now a crucial part of any business. The magic of a drool-worthy dessert photo goes way beyond looks. Picture this: your amazing baked goodies, beautifully captured and splashed across your socials. The result? An excited audience that can’t help but double-tap, a boost in sales as your treats practically jump off the screen, and a rock-solid trust with customers who can practically taste your desserts through their screens. In a world where visuals rule the roost, a captivating photo isn’t just eye candy; it’s a ticket to more likes, more shares, and more sales. Think about it – how many times have you saved a scrumptious dessert pic on Instagram, leading you to explore that bakery’s website or even plan a trip out to buy something? We eat with our eyes first, and the impact of a well-captured dessert is a game-changer.

My own dessert photography journey started with just wanting to share my creations. I had no intention of ever selling them! But even then, good photography was critical. No one sends their friend a picture of a cupcake they want to re-create, or saves a photo of a cake recipe they want to try if it’s not a clear image. No matter how good the dessert tastes, it has to look desirable online. So, armed with just my iPhone and a hunger for improvement, I set out to capture the essence of my culinary creations. But of course, the first few shots were a far cry from the mouthwatering images I had in mind. More of a “What just happened?” than a “Wow, that’s amazing!“. Blurry pics, weird angles, and lighting that did my treats absolutely no favours. But you know what? There’s no shame in starting from scratch. We all have to kick off somewhere, right? And trust me, there’s nothing wrong with just putting a cake on a stand and going *click* on your phone. In fact, it’s a rite of passage, a step that every dessert photographer takes. We have all been there!

I knew my photos weren’t quite hitting the mark, and I was determined to improve. So I spent hours playing with my set-up, scouring the internet for tips, watching videos, and practicing. It was time consuming and incredibly frustrating at times… but there was progress! Slowly but surely I figured some things out, upgraded my equipment, and started to find my own style. The ‘before and after’ transformation was astounding. The evolution from amateurish snapshots to captivating visuals that practically exude flavor is a testament to the power of practice and perseverance. I am definitely still no expert! In fact, I’m still learning every day. But that’s the beauty of this journey – it’s all about growing, experimenting, and savoring those ‘a-ha‘ moments.

So, why am I spilling the beans on all of this? Because I’ve packaged my learning curve, my breakthroughs, and yes, even my face-palm moments into something I wish I had back then – a dessert photography course that’ll take you from “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “Hey, I’ve got this!“. I wanted to help you all skip right through the frustrating, learning-the-hard-way phase. I come from a family of teachers (I even taught for a little bit!), I love to learn, and I love to teach – so this is truly a passion project!

From step-by-step visuals to in-depth explanations, examples, and exercises, this guide is designed to equip you with the skills needed to create dessert photos that resonate, engage, and leave your audience craving more. So, I’ve sprinkled in some fun exercises to help you flex those dessert photography muscles!
