I had been planning to throw a regular old New Year’s party with my friends, but when we all realized that we had recently binged (and loved) the White Lotus, I knew that had to be the theme. I mean, what better way to ring in the new year than sampling a bunch of iconic drinks and foods from the show? So we got to planning a White Lotus themed party, complete with arancini, macarons, Aperol spritzes, and of course, White Lotus cupcakes. We also included some classic party foods like spinach dip and a veggie tray, as well as drinks like espresso martinis and Champagne.
Here’s a short vid showing some of the snacks we had:
One of the best parts of the party was dressing up as our favourite characters from the show (or least favourite tbh – there are some hate-able folks!). It’s a great theme because people can either try for a specific character, or just go for “eccentric resort wear” and they will fit right in. Overall, the party was a success… probably more from the fun people and wild games we played, but hey – the food and drinks were a hit too!
I want to show you how to make White Lotus flower cupcakes, since this was my task for the evening (Tyler handled the arancini, spinach dip, and Espresso Martinis). I also made the macarons and veggie tray, but I will save the macs for another day and I trust that you guys know how to cut up carrots and peppers.
You will need:
- a batch of cupcakes
- a batch of white frosting
- miniature marshmallows
- white sanding sugar
- scissors

Cupcakes: I made funfetti cupcakes to fit with the New Year’s vibe… but you can use any flavour for the base of the cupcake.

Frosting: For the frosting, I went with vanilla so that any buttercream that poked through at the end would be white, and would blend in. You can absolutely use a boxed cupcake mix and canned frosting for this if you do not have the time or energy to make them from scratch. This tutorial is really about the decorating, so do whatever you gotta do to get yourself to step 1.

Decorating:
- Start with baked cupcakes and buttercream frosting already prepared.
- Cut the mini marshmallows in half diagonally.
- Dip the sticky side of each marshmallow half in white sanding sugar.
- Spread some buttercream frosting on the top of each cupcake.
- Place the sugared marshmallow halves in a ring around the outer edge of the frosted cupcake.
- Make another circle of marshmallow halves inside the first ring, then a third smallest circle in the middle to complete the White Lotus flower design.

Here is a video showcasing the steps:
I also decorated a few cupcakes with plain white rosettes, to give people an option that was not covered in marshmallow. Variety is always nice!
